Concerning the history of the telescope, however, Paolo Galluzzi told another version of the tale in “The Lynx and the Telescope” [19]. According to him, Federico Cesi, the founder of the Accademia dei Lincei, decided in 1612 to reconstruct the history of the invention of the telecope on the basis of testimonies from members of the Accademia. He came to the conclusion that the theoretical framework for the instrument had been developed by his co-founder Giovan Battista Della Porta as early as 1609, whereas Galileo worked in parallel to refine it. This version had been endorsed by Kepler himself in his correspondence on the Siderius Nuntius, giving Galileo full credit as the main inventor. Kepler dismissed Lippershey’s achievement as a matter of pure luck, with no scientific foundation. But still, Galileo remained unhappy about the assertion that Della Porta should have developed the optical theory before him, since he claimed that part of the story for himself as well.
